Some organizations claim to be "no-kill" due to a live-release rate that is 90% or above. While in theory, this is a commendable goal, it only speaks to outcomes and does not look into the deeper issues at hand. LRR is simply a useful measure for organizations to self-assess their progress. Gulf Coast Humane Society is a 501 not-for-profit, no-kill, animal welfare organization established as the first non-profit animal welfare organization in southwest Florida in 1947. Our shelter does not receive any federal, state, or county funding and no funding from the Humane Society of the United States or ASPCA.
We rely solely on donations, grants, bequests and fundraising events to further our mission of caring for the neglected and abandoned pets of Southwest Florida. Halifax Humane Society has specifically targeted animal groups in greatest need of affordable, accessible spay/neuter opportunities. We also offer other services to assist people with their pets such as low cost euthanasia and cremation services, as well as lost and found service to reunite owners with lost pets. Moreover our Pet Food Bank assists members of the community struggling to feed their pets through our free pet food bank and our SafeHaven Program is available for those domestic violence victims who flee their homes with pets.
The program provides 30 days of free housing and care for the pet until the owner is able to get back on his/her feet. During this time Asheville Humane Society staff provide compassionate care to help the lost animals be as comfortable as possible while they wait for their families to find them.
For many stray animals their families are not found and ownership by Asheville Humane Society is assumed legally after the minimum 72 hour holding period. We then place them up for adoption and help them find a new home. Owner surrendered animals are evaluated shortly after arrival for medical and temperament soundness. This rescue has an office located in Eden Prairie but all their animals are in foster care. They hold regular adoption events for people to meet their animals and participate in community events as well. The BCACR is a county organization that is supported by tax dollars. They are responsible for picking up stray pets and ensuring pets are licensed. We save the most vulnerable animals and enrich the lives of pets and people.
AHS is a private, nonprofit, 501 animal welfare organization and is not affiliated with any local, state or national humane groups. Those who end up homeless with pets have trouble in giving up their pets because of the bond they have formed with them.

The Humane Society of Tuolumne County is dedicated to improving the lives of companion animals in our community and finding permanent and loving adoptive homes for the cats and dogs in our care. For example, one organization may decide to become "no-kill" by closing its doors to animal surrenders and disallowing intake of less adoptable animals. Pasadena Humane adopted the Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering model because we believe it offers the most holistic approach to sheltering. No-kill has been used as a marketing tool and rallying cry, but it does not reflect the responsibility animal welfare organizations like Pasadena Humane have to the animals in our care and to keeping our communities safe. As a result, we've decreased euthanization by 83%—that's 130,000 additional lives saved.
